Tina vs. The Goodreads Challenge 2.0

Posted January 10, 2018 by Tina in As Discussed by Tina / 8 Comments

Last year, I decided not to participate in the Goodreads challenge (you can read the post here), I didn’t want to aim for a number so I set my goal to one and today I’m going to share with you what I learned about not doing the challenge and how much did I read.

In 2017, I read 97 books. I didn’t count the books I beta read because some hadn’t come yet but if we had counted those I’m at 100.

1. If I didn’t pick up a book, I didn’t feel bad about it.
Reading is definitely one of my favorite things to do but sometimes I find myself wanting to read more and putting less time into family. I tried my best to find an equal balance for that, I’m still trying to find a balance but now I don’t feel guilty if I don’t pick up a book for a few days or a few weeks.

2. I didn’t have to worry about Goodreads telling me I was behind in my challenge.
Every year Goodreads would kindly (or not so kindly) remind me that I was behind in my Goodreads challenge. Not this year! It was actually kind of awesome to not have Goodreads constantly remind me how behind I was.

3. I was actually surprised to see how much I read.
I read 97 books about 43 of those were audiobooks which was also awesome to see. I read some great books and I read some not so great books. But the thing that made me feel great was that I read the books I wanted to read. I didn’t have to put any to the side to read ARCs. (I’m actually not interested in ARCs as I once was in the beginning of my blogging career but that post is to come later).

I read what I wanted, when I wanted and I didn’t feel bad about taking a month to read a book. I was able to soak in every word and when I had a goal my mind set was to try and finish as many books as possible to reach my goal. I didn’t do that this year and it was honestly the best feeling.

4. I also learned that I definitely want to step away from Young Adult for a while.
I’ve been feeling like I am too old for Young Adult for sometime and wrote a post about it here. This past year, definitely solidified my decision. I couldn’t find myself getting sucked into Young Adult. There were a ton of amazing Young Adult books out there but so many fell flat for me. Don’t get me wrong you’ll see a couple Young Adult books on here but I will definitely read more New Adult and Adult books and that’s what you will see more on the blog from now on.

Am I participating in the Goodreads challenge this year?

I considered it. But then I decided against it. I want to read as much or as little as I please so I set my reading goal to 1 so I can keep track of how much I’m reading. I also thought of separating the Littles reading goals with a different goodreads (which I have done in the past) the problem with that is I forget to log in and I forget to track their reads so I decided to just combine the two and use different shelves for books they read and the ones I read.

What about you? Are you participating in the goodreads challenge? If so, what is your goal?
